In
1942
The
congregation of “Hi-Way Gospel Mission” grew so much
that the renovated chicken house soon was too small! In 1942 the Green Owl Dine and Dance Hall was rented, with living quarters
in the basement. Deverills and David Jamiesons moved into it.
This was situated about where the end of the Sky Train line is
now in Surrey.
About
1945
About 1945, Deverills and the growing congregation started holding
services in the old Hjorth Road Hall. Rev. D. Breen came for
some meetings. Evening services were in a Japanese Hall on Timberland
Road near the Fraser River. In 1946 tent meetings were held in
the flats at the south end of Pattullo Bridge.
A church
building was constructed on Hjorth Road (104 Ave.) very near
King George Highway, with services held in the basement
during construction. It was now called “Evangelistic Temple”.
However it was not registered under any fellowship of churches
and eventually was lost to another group.
The
Church was Given the Name "People Full Gospel Church"
in 1952
A core group
of original members immediately stated meetings at Hjorth Road
Hall. This was in 1952. Rev. Bill Thompson asked
Rev. Godfred Jensen to come and be their pastor and the church
was now given the name ”Peoples Full Gospel Church.”
A
New Church Building in
1953
In 1953 tent
meetings were held on David & Margaret Wiebe’s
property. The Wiebe’s donated one of their lots for a new
church building with the stipulation that it must be under a
registered organization so there would be no danger of losing
another building! Consequently it was registered under Apostolic
Church of Pentecost of Canada. Pastor Jensen and the congregation,
including Brother Jake Harder who had been saved under Rev. Frank
Small’s ministry, worked hard constructing the new church
building on the south-east corner of 104 Ave. and 140 St. in
Surrey. More people started attending church services, Sunday
School and Youth Group. There was a wonderful celebration at
the Dedication on Oct. 11, 1954!
Rev.
Robert Dean Came From Victoria in 1957 to be Pastor
Rev. Robert
Dean came from Victoria in 1957 to be pastor. The property
that the new church was situated on had just been bought
by BC Hydro because high voltage power lines were being brought
through. Hydro bought property on the north side of 104 Ave,
moving the church building to the new location with the help
of Nickel Brother’s Moving. The congregation bought a partly
finished house beside the new location of the church. In the
ten years the Deans pastored here, with the help of their son
Cal and daughter Elizabeth, the Youth Group thrived and the congregation
grew.
In
1967, Rev. Wes Schindel Became Pastor
In 1967,
Rev. Wes Schindel became pastor and the next church building
was constructed at 14456 – 104 A Ave, the dedication
taking place in 1968.
Rev.
Daniel Breen in 1970
Rev. Daniel
Breen came in Oct. 1970 to be pastor, with Elmer “Bud” McLean
being assistant pastor for a short time. Along with the growth
of the congregation, came the need for further expansion, so
in 1977 the section of the building which now houses the sanctuary
and fellowship hall was added on. This created space for many
Sunday School rooms, larger nursery space, offices, and Youth
Lounge. The first service in the new building was held on March
12, 1978.) The Dedication Celebration was later in 1978.
With Pastor
Breen becoming moderator of ACOP, the load was too heavy for
him. In 1976 Rev. Don Carmont was brought in from the
East coast to assist in youth ministry, later becoming assistant
pastor. Stan Powers came on staff part time in 1979, in conjuction
with teaching at Jubilee Bible College. When Pastor Breen moved
to Saskatoon to be in the ACOP head office full time, Don Carmont
became senior pastor (year?) Carmonts purchased the manse on
104 A Ave. Rev. W. Jack Morgan came to be Don’s assistant.
In
1984 the Carmonts moved to Lynnwood, WA, to Pastor a Church
In 1984 the Carmonts moved to Lynnwood, WA, to pastor a church.
Pastor Stan Powers, Pastor Jack Morgan, and Rev. Lorne Pritchard
made up a team and together filled in as pastors for the interim.
Rev.
Ben Kirkpatrick came in Feb. 1985
Rev. Ben Kirkpatrick came in Feb. 1985 as senior pastor and
served until Jan. 1988. Rev. Merv Kurtz became assistant pastor
in Sept. 1985. Then in 1988 Rev. Stan Powers was interim senior
pastor close to six months after Kirkpatricks went to Saskatchewan.
Rev.
Wayne Derdall Became Senior Pastor Sept. 1988
Rev. Wayne
Derdall became senior pastor Sept. 1988. During his tenure
Peoples Full Gospel Church planted a new church in 1989
under the leadership of Rev. Stan Powers, at Sunrise Golf Course
on Number 10 Highway in Surrey – close to Langley. Sonrise
Full Gospel moved into their new building in 2001, across from
Sunrise Golf Course.
Also during
Pastor Derdall’s tenure, the Family Life Centre
was built, housing new offices, gym, chapel, etc. resulting in
the church address being changed to 14455 – 104 Ave., Surrey.
Associate Pastor was Gary Langerud; Pastoral Care – Merv.
Kurtz, and Youth Pastors during this time were Paul Anderton
(1995) and Rev. Wes Jonat (‘90-‘93 & Oct.’99-June
2002). People were coming to know Christ and many were added
to the church over the years. A ministry to the community called “Gods’ Heart
Ministry” came into being. (Other congregations meeting
here – Filipino etc.)
Rev.
Alan Mortensen came to serve as Interim Senior Pastor in
July, 2000
The Derdalls moved to Calgary in July, 2000 and Rev. Alan Mortensen
came to serve as interim senior pastor for one year, with John
Hartman doing Pastoral Care.
From
July 2001
In July 2001 Rev. Mike Poulin became the senior pastor and served the church
until October, 2003. Rev. Mervyn Switzer, a retired ACOP pastor from Regina,
Saskatchewan became the interim pastor in January 2004 and helped the church
through the process of getting a new senior pastor. Rev. David
Curtis was senior pastor at Peoples from August 2004 to October 2007. After being without a senior pastor for approximately one year, Rev. Kirk Duncan came to serve as interim pastor in September 2008.
